I have not heard whether or not silk fibers be seen on the face of a stamp. So, if it is possible, is this silk paper?

Could this be a silk fiber to the left of the "R" of the word "THREE" and another diagonal fiber to the left of the lower number "3"?

Yes, silk fibers can be seen from the front of the stamp sometimes. However these do not appear to be silk threads from these scans. They are the wrong color, to start with. A good 600 or 1200dpi scan of both sides should be able to show if it is silk or not. Does the stamp have a dated cancel? If it does, it has to be dated at least 1870, or it has no chance to be silk paper.

From the color of the background it looks like it may be on a CDV (Carte de Visite, an early photograph), in which case it is absolutely NOT an R18d. CDVs were only taxed for a two-year period from mid 1864-1866 and the silk papers didn't appear until early 1870.

It is on a photo. It has an unattractive cross hatch (tic tac toe) ink cancel; no date on front or back. It is nice to know fibers can be seen on the face. The photo with stamp is not mine but is on ebay. I am watching it until I have more info before deciding to buy. It is a BIN for 6 bucks.

EDIT: Thanks rev, being on a photo settles the question.
