Up until the mid-to-late 1800s, you literally *could* give a half cent in change. The last U.S. half cent was minted in 1857. I collect half cent coins by date. |

That is a magnificent looking half cent.
But please note, TinMan, the US has never issued a penny. The British did, but not the US. |

Quote: ...the US has never issued a penny. The British did, but not the US. There's a technicality here...the History Channel explains it as follows: Quote: Today's British pennies (called "pence" when referring to a quantity of money) are worth one hundredth of a pound and minted in copper-plated steel.
The official term for the American penny is "one-cent piece." However, when the U.S. Mint struck its first one-cent coins—then the size of today's half-dollars and 100-percent copper—in 1793, Americans continued to use the British term out of habit. |

Here in Canada we said both, until last year. Now we have no pennies, and certainly no cents!
I do have an 1842 Province of Canada Half Penny, issued by the Bank of Montreal, my present employer (no, that's not how they pay us!) Unfortunately not in good enough condition to show up on a scan. |
