Keeping everyone one their toes ...
I have three of these Washington 64/65 (?) - all in various stages and colors, all 12 oerf. Two appear to be cut around the edge (not sure what grandpa was doing there). The unused would be 65 Rose? What color would the others be? There are impressions on the backs of the used two. Are those grills or just the pressure of the design while being printed?

Those all look like 65s to me, but monitors don;'t always display colors correctly.

Rose is, well, rose. Pink is... we.. think Barbie Ferrari pink.

I don't see any pink in those stamps. They all look like #65. The two stamps cut on the edge were probably cut when the stamps were carelessly cut off the envelope.

JenB,

I believe the impressions on the backs of the two stamps are just from the design being pressed into the paper. This was common on this issue. I don't see any grills, but the images are small.

More on color: This issue came in a wide variety of colors. Many collectors who acquire a group of them see a wide range of shades in front of them and naturally think they might have one of the rarer colors (pink, rose pink, pigeon blood). Your stamps appear to fall in the rose shade, and on the paler side. The paler rose shades can look close to "pinkish" but the required pink pigment is very distinct, and not apparent in your stamps.

I didn't want to do this in my first response to your thread, but I'm going to post an image of my #64/65 color set. The reason I do this reluctantly is because your middle stamp may look close to my rose pink. If you look closely (maybe put your eyes six inches from the monitor like I do), and stare for a while at my image, you should see a distinct baby pink color in my #64 and #64b. I don't see this color in any of your stamps.

Beyond this, I think your best bet is to have someone else look at your stamps in person if you think you might have a color other than one of the #65 colors.

JenB,
Go to www.3cent1861.com for a good reference on colors of the 1861 3-cent issue. There is a very wide range of colors for that issue and even though this site covers most, there are some not noted.

Thanks for the link, Al E. Gator. It's a shame the images are so small.

Thank you so much for the samples! I can now see where I might have two rose and one rose red slightly, but all 65s.

Those color charts make my head spin. We just a similar discussion about these two stamps at our last club meeting. It was mentioned that a 64 would stand out next to the others. Similar to the 2 examples above.
