I think this is an 1861 #68 (yellow green?) Or is it an 1875 #104 reprint? It is 12 perf. Once again there is a number penciled on the back, but I am concerned just because the books grandpa was putting them in are from the 1920's ... and they don't have the different variations.

When I compare it to the Scott's pictures, I am sure there is not a thick line under the stars ... interested to hear what other collectors think of this one, too.

Given that it is postally used, most likely a 68. It doesnt have the deeper color expected on a 68A, or the strong upper frame line in the ornament above the stars one would expect on a 62B.

Scott states the following about the 1875 reprints (which includes #104)

Quote:
These stamps can be distinguished from the 1861-66 issue by the brighter colors, the sharper proof-like impressions and the paper which is very white instead of yellowish.

The reason for the sharper impressions was that new plates were made for these special-printings. As such, the stamps really stand out!

Your stamp is a 68.

Cheers!

Brian

Yup,

That's a 68. 62bs also tend to have very tight margins and I've never seen one that wasn't a dark green shade.
