I am seeing a chestnut or orange-brown(brick red) shade on this stamp. Opinions please.

CoinWatcher, This is most likely a rose or rose red shade that appears to be sulfuretted (discolored/darkened). It's hard to judge the color due to the discoloration. |

I have been told that all men are colour blind and see colours differently than a woman. These Washington's make me feel colour blind when trying to determine if pink or salmon etc.. I got this one on the bay yesterday and think it looks pink. What do you think? |

Thanks for the help. When I get it I will get some pictures in the bright sunlight and hopefully will get a better idea of what colour it really is. |

Whatever the color may be for the first stamp, the incredible sharpness of even the tiniest features makes me to be of the opinion that is among the very first stamps printed from the plate that produced it. |

cw- stamp number one looks different to me on my Android phone than it does on my iPad, and that's the problem trying to tell anybody what shade they have because it's going to look different on every monitor. Need the stamp in hand and then high res scans to bring out individual pixels and the different hues making up the shade. On my ipad I would've guessed red rose but on my phone it looks more brown. Stamp number 2 is faded and no way to know but it has a brown/yellow shade so it can't be a pink. Must be #65.
Hope this helps, Ray |

I wouldn't say washed out but rather the image looks over-exposed but I'll agree to the Scott #65 just the shade/year is in question. Since you have it in hand maybe try here - http://www.3cent1861.com/ |

The above stamp arrived today and the color looks completely different. Salmon? Where can one research the plating characteristics of this issue? |

CoinWatcher, Many scanner and camera auto-adjust features can do funny things to the color and shade of the subject being imaged. That could be what happened to the seller's image. Sometimes you can detect when a seller adjusts color after the initial image is acquired by looking for flecks of color in a black background when there should be none. A white background tends to result in truer colors in my experience, so I'll trust your scan to be more accurate. Your stamp appears to fall in the pale to medium brown red range, although seeing this in person would be needed to confirm this: |

Thanks CC. I have noticed that the bottom right corner of the bust looks different than my other 65's. What is that all about? |

CoinWatcher, The ink quality varied quite a bit on this issue. As far as I can tell, the impression on your stamp just isn't very good. This could have been due to a worn plate, too much oil in the ink, the paper being too dry preventing the ink from bonding properly, or other factors. Here's a closeup of a clearer impression: |
