I found something I think is pretty interesting earlier today while I was I.D.-ing a few 1˘ Washington's. I believe that I found an example of over inking and a pretty pronounced smear on this Scott #498. Perf.11, Flat Plate (as per the tin-foil test)

Notice in the "O" & "S" in POSTAGE and down the right in the laurel leaves also in Washington's hair & field behind his head. The whole frame looks a bit ragged.

Here is a close-up @1200 d.p.i.
(I manipulated the tint to darken it so it shows up a bit better)

Probably the sleeve of one of the people working the press scraped accross a freshly printed sheet that was already a bit overinked.

Now all you have to do is find the stamp that was above it in the sheet, it will be smeared too, given the streaking in the upper margin of the stamp.

That is an ink smear! It almost looks like red ink spilled on the stamps more than a production error though and my reason for saying that is that the design isn't disturbed around the blotch and the ink is very heavy in the center. Also, Washington's profile was stuck ok in the center of that blotch.
