These forgeries where found in a box lot of stamps my father purchased and has us wondering a few things about them.
- Could they have actually been used for postage or is it more likely that the cancels where applied to deceive a collector?
- Is there any possibility to I.D. these to a specific forger?

Any thoughts or insight regarding these is greatly appreciated.
Harry

More likely to have faked cancels than to have been postally used. I don't know where to tell you to look but some forgeries have significant monetary value.

Both very crude forgeries.

Wow, such poor forgeries. Still, it is unlikely that most people were aware of the designs of the higher value stamps (much as is the same today) and may very well have been fooled by them. If this was the case these forged postage stamps were probably resold on the secondary market to a business. The cancels look really authentic to me.

Still quite collectable! I beleive the cancellations are also fake - esp the bullseye on the 122.

Almost certainly philatelic forgeries and likely from Europe. The 90c appears to be the same one that's illustrated in Brookman and it's also known as an invert.

Definitely collectable! I love them but as suggested the cancellations, like the stamps, are spurious at best. If you ever part with them do it here on SCF!

Thanks all for your great information!

Billw2 - Why do you think they could be from Europe? And which Brookman publication did you see the similar stamp pictured in.

For now I think my Dad is going to mount these in his album - properly identified of course - with a short write up of any information he can gather regarding these forgeries.

Harry,

Because that's where this sort of material generally came from. Page 186, Volume 2.

You can download the book here for free (Courtesy of the USPCS):

The book is titled (3 volume set) "The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century" by Lester G Brookman. It's the "bible" on classic US.
