Personally, I think Steve Malack is losing his marbles, pricewise... but, on the other hand, between him, Bill Langs, Stu Katz, and Momen, they're all creating a strong perception of value in the classics...

I remember 10+ years ago, when all of this "expensive material of today" was dirt cheap on ebay...

My Jackson cost me $40.00 when I bought about 8 years ago it is used. Was the first stamp I spent that much on. I thought I had a hole in my head at that time, turns out it was just Jackson...

Well... history tells us that AJ died as a result of 2 gunshot wounds, but not directly from being shot... it was from lead poisoning... not from such an accurate shot to the forehead as your stamp 'demonstrates'...

I think that's a $400 stamp IMO.

It's VF for a Black Jack but I'm not in love with the perfs or the centering. Not for $900.

Go on powersearch and look at the one Siegel sold back in November for $1,100. Add 15% and you're at $1,265 or 40% more than this stamp. I think the one they sold was better than 100% nicer from the pics. PSE 90 too.

IMO you can get one that nice for cat or under and you can get a much nicer one for that kind of money.

This proves my point that a lot of seemingly "nice" stuff sits on ebay for years because it;s grotesquely overpriced.

To Billw... Picked up (this) 73 earlier in the year... not sure about the perfs or the gum, but the centering nailed me...

I have it in a Fedex envelope with about 20 some-odd other items I'll be sending to you sometime next month...

Disi,

That's a nice stamp, well centered and with nice margins. I don't mess with unused 61s that much but the perfs look good to me. The only reservation that I might have is that it might be a regum, the perf tips look too "clean" to me. I'd expect to see some paper fibers on the tips.

Btw, I'm not Bill Weiss the expertizer, we just share almost the same name :)

Why would a seller of a higher dollar stamp not bother to take a picture/scan of the back of a stamp? Does this not send a strong "warning" to any buyer?

A couple of used blackjacks purchased back in the early days of ebay. Pity about the corner on the on-cover one.

yup.
That 73 was probably about a $50 stamp (which was the catalog value) back in 2000 or so. Submitted it for grading a few years later as that was happening. You used to be able to find nice things on ebay for reasonable prices.

The other one is a grill. They seem to be better margined, as a rule.

Here's another I have in my album. (I haven't looked at these in years - thanks for the reason to dig in).
C.

All three look sweet to me even the one on cover. In my opinion, too much emphasis is put on minor imperfections like that (especially conditions affecting the back of the stamp, e.g., gum, hinge marks). I know it affects price, but to me if the image is good quality and its well centered then I'm happy.
