Was watching this 259, which went off
at (relatively) cheap price... ($83.50)
both sides and bottom didn't look quite
right to me perf-wise...

Opinions?

chipg... thank you kindly... I've read
through the first 2 pages... fabulous
material everyone should read... hope
alot of people read this thread and
save your link...

I'll have to try the perf lineup 'trick'
and perf hole size... it's the perf hole
sizes and shapes which made me highly
suspicious of this 259...

A lot of it is spending a great deal of time studying genuine perfs so you will know what they should look like, than ones that don't look right will be easier to spot. Having so many auctions on line is a big help since they often have large clear images and at least some descriptions of reperfed stamps to learn from as well.

Rev... I'm seeing that... and it's
great "eye-training"... which is why
I stayed away from the 259 as tempting
as it was... learning more and more
every day...

Reperfing; Build a small reference collection of the cheapest varieties of each set then use those stamps as your template for lining up genuine perfs with perfs you suspect might be fake. That helps. But it's not perfect because reperfers also have duplicated the exact correct gauge on some stamps so studying the characteristics of the holes and tips is helpful too.
