I noticed that my 216 has hatching in front of Garfield's face and the one illustrated on swedish tiger has no hatching only horizontal lines. New variety?

My Garfields appear to have the same type of hatching as shown in your picture. Not a variety.

I just did an ebay search of 216
and looked at about 8-10 listings...
all have the hatching... therefore
Swedish Tiger is showing an inferior
photo where the stamp's detail is
not clear...

Internet scans are subject to lots of failures including resolution and color. I'm not sure what the Swede is showing, but if there is a variety here, he is the one who has it. But take heart, there is no variety without the diagonal crosshatching in the vignette. How can I be sure? Because all the plates used for the 5c indigo had earlier been approved and used for the 5c brown. I happen to have a print from die state one for the 5c Garfield, and the earliest proved die state already has the crosshatching. So the stamp you show is the normal, and the image that the Swede is showing is derelict.
