On (my) computer screen, it appears as orange-red... but it could appear a different color on another screen...
Given the wide variety of colors for the 279B, it would take an expertizer to give you an exact color ID... and for a single canceled stamp, it would not be cost effective (in the sense)... |

When I match the colors on the swedish tiger it appears to match the rose carmine the closest. |

Precisely what I mean... If you would like to see current offerings of 279B click the ebay link below... http://www.ebay.com/sch/19th-Centur...=nc&LH_BIN=1279B collectors prefer the plate strips of three with full imprint... and, despite the color variations you see (and their prices) the most collectable is plate # 505 (which is the rarest) as it is the first plate # of the 279B... |

To ID the 279B it's best to stick to the recutting tells. http://www.1847usa.com/1894/2cType3Vs4.htm It Seems like you have that down though so, you are most-likely talking about the orange-reds and othor color variants (which yours appears to be.). My suggestion is to build a color reference example page. Here is one of mine. |

What does using a color guide do? Are they all the same stamp? Which stamp do you use or do you have one each for all colors? |

Or you could buy the Scott color guide for those stamps. Kind of expensive, but if you're gonna agonize for hours or send items to be expertized just for the color, it might be worth it. |

They are (mostly) the same stamp. With a number of them it's a bit easier to see all the different shades in one spot. |

It'll at least give you an idea. 279 green, 279B Carmine; 279Bd orange red; 279Bf Carmine; 279Bg pink (possible c carmine rose?); 279Bi brownish-orange |

These guys the earlier ones are a bit easier as the ink was a bit more consistent. |

Also, an SCF member posted this really good ID chart. I copied it and printed it out and now rescanned it (@300dpi) so, I'm not really sure how that will effect the color translation but I find it useful if even just for the types. I can't remember who posted this originally but I'll attempt to find the original post again.
