Well, I finally got most of them soaked and sorted! What's the quickest way to find/identify them in the Scott's catalog?

How did you sort them? By country?
I would try sorting them by wheather they are definitives or commemoratives and then try to sort them by sets. Because if you can find some stamps belonging together in one set, you don't have to look up every single one, but you'll find them all at once the moment you find the set in your catalogue.

Do you want to keep doubles, or do you only want one of each? Because if you only want one, I'll also sort out the doubles now and set them aside, to get a better overview.

Well stampcollector89, as I'm pretty new at this also I'll put my 2cents worth in.

If you've gotten all or most through the mail the last four years I would pick the country you have the most of and go back 4 or 5 years and start from there. the stamps are listed chronologically in the catalogues. Not every image of every stamp is in there if they were issues in sets they will have one example of that set but they do have a description of what's on the stamp. It sometimes takes me a few passes to find one but I always manage.

Oh yeh I place all my stamps so I can see them ( if I have too many 20 or so at at time. I place the ones that obviously a set together to make the process a little faster.

I managed to identify about 2000 Polish stamp in just short of a week this way ( not forgetting I work full full time.

Hope this helps a little

How about on a per country basis?

Drudenfus, I like your idea of mounting the commemoratives in an attractive way. I am presently working with Solomon Island stamps and I have a number of christmas stamps with very different ways of celebrating the holiday. The stamps are from several different years. I am mounting them on blank pages so that their christmas story makes sense. I suppose you could approach many different stamps topically that are from the same country regardless of the catalog set-up. It depends on what your idea of a collection should show. Thanks for the suggestion.
