OK,Just for my own edification is this a guide dot on this Scott #185?
I know it don't add to anything other than my description but I'm just curious?

Also, perhaps someone could straighten out the Scott number. I'm assuming it's an American Banknote Co.'s soft porous paper #185 because of the "fuzzyness" around the perfs but I know I could way off base and could be a Continental Banknote Co.'s hard paper #179 too. My reason for the A.B.N.C. Scott #189 is also because of the very late usage in 1882

First, here is the cover it's [Scott #185] attached to:

Now isolated image of the stamp:

And lastly, here is the suspect, possible guide dot? (Rotographer's dot):

Actually seeing this up-close It may be a hard paper #179...still unsure because it's on cover.

Looks like soft paper to me Jeff. The color is not as bright, but mainly the perf teeth have a lot of fuzz. Given the late usage and these other factors, I lean toward a 185 without seeing the actual item.

As for the dot LL, it looks a bit dark and oddly located for a guide dot. A much better candidate for that is the dot below the numeral "5". There is also a rather oddly positioned dot toward the bottom of the vignette frame at about the point where Taylor's lapels cross, and another one in the lower part of the numeral "5" itself.

Was this stamp exposed to rubella?
