I have what appears to be a 30 cent American Bank Note, Sc.190 with an odd cancel. It looks as though the cancel imprinted a grill like effect on to the stamp. Can any one tell me what this cancel is, or what is on the back of the stamp? Thank you in advance for any help with this.
Don

I see it that way too. whatever was used to roll that cancel onto the stamp did a number on the soft paper too. That the reverse marks only appear at points covered by the cancel on the obverse seems to point to the origin rather directly. Whether or not this was a patent device I cannot say. I don't recognize it per se, but I would not rule it out.

Sort of looks like a revenue type cancel but the ink on the front seems to point to an odd type of roller cancel of some type? It would be interesting to see the device though! At first I thought maybe a split grill with a manuscript type cancel but the ink on the front seems to mimic the vertical height of the imprint on the reverse so who knows?
