Hello all,

can you please help me with this error? Is it rare/common/valueable? Thanks

It's an example of pre-printing paper folds, and falls into the "freak/oddity" category (not technically an "error.") Would definitely be of interest to banknote specialists, as it's a pretty striking example w/ multiple folds.

This is not rare, but is very desirable. As was stated, this one is "Striking". A Banknote specialist would be especially interested in this. Retail for these is in the ~$20-$30 range

Gee, I'd love to be able to get Baknote Issue PPFs at 20-30 each. If anyone knows a good source at that level please steer me to it/them (and I mean that seriously). Most of the ones I have fell into the 50-125 range.

While these are not rare, they certainly are not common, and those that show the anomaly well get a decent price. This one is rather nice despite some partially clipped perfs, and I would put it at something close to $80 retail. If you're thinking of selling, let me know.

It's hard to resist the urge to respond in the same tone as you - perhaps you're having a rough day?

I suppose I could have used the word "auction" instead of "retail" to make things less confusing.

Jinji, and everyone else who is reading, needs realistic expectations. A common 3c Banknote is on the low-end of the price scale for EFOs. I frequently encounter them on ebay when I search 19th century used stamps for "fold" while looking for EFO 1869s.

Here's a 3c 158 with a $27 BIN. I'll bet he'd entertain an offer of $20 ...

Here are all the sold listings from ebay over the last couple of months. Note that the most any stamp sold for was a great-looking #70 for $71.

Read it with a smile on your face, Brian; I had one. Maybe I should have tried using a smiley.

But you're kind of doing an apples and oranges thing here. I know a lot of collectors ignore the distinctions between the companies in the 3c large Banknotes, but a Banknote specialist won't. The stamp in question is a NATIONAL Bank Note Co large Banknote. How does that stack up? In the group of completed sales listings there was not a single Banknote issue. And the parallel 3c was a Continental 3c, which doesn't fill the hole. Moreover, that one has but a single line of creasing, whereas the stamp in this thread had a bunch.

My comment is based on trying to match the stamp in question, and I have not found the National 3c with PPF to be as abundant as the later ones, let alone better examples like this one. I am not as much on top of this market as others, I will admit, but when I run into really good PPFs on ebay, the sellers usually have those priced up.

Of course, sellers who don't know the difference will sell them cheaply. And on the other end the larger auction houses won't run them as single lots, so to get one you have to buy a group. $$$$ But as I said, admittedly I am not often on the prowl for them and do not pay attention much, so I might be out of the ebay loop on this in general. But for better PPF examples, the average ebay price is not the right benchmark, even for a 3c Banknote.
