Just wondering if this block of 4 #421 in Scott's is actually worth $200. Expecting only to pay $66 or less?

And what do you think the grade would be?

Thanks

John

Hi, John... in the real world, 10% to 15% of catalog for used,
but with a premium since it's a block... so 25% to 35% of SCV
would be in order...

Numerical grading aside, this block is definitely XF overall...

I'm a little concerned about the back, as it looks like something is pasted there to hold the middle perfs together. You should ask for a back scan.

It actually looks quite dirty as well. Obviously used on a package, it appears to have transferred some of the paper dye of the wrapping to the stamp when being soaked off. I see it often when soaking stamps off packaging paper of that era. Same happens when soaking more modern stamps of those yellow envelopes

It has also been folded horizontally at some point.

I'd think you could find a better example at a similar price

John,

I think you "mixed" two different concepts: CATALOG value versus what you EXPECT TO PAY.

I rarely expect to pay catalog value; and I don't like to pay more than half that. Most stamps are exchanged among collectors for far less than catalog.

But if you're buying hard to find items, or buying retail from an established dealer, then expect to pay catalog value.

Just a few things noted: dirty, off center to lower right, pulled and/or short perfs, heavily canceled, Perforation separations held together by that hinge and a horizontal crease through the center perforation row...Now I'm not trying to be mean here but $66.00 seems way to high for this. Like mentioned above it's only a fraction of catalog value even if it were perfect so it only goes down from there. Respectfully -Jeff

Thank you all for you input! All my concerns were addressed. I am here to learn. I was unaware that used stamps were traded that low!

I'll pass on this one!

Again, thanks

John... before you pass on the block (putting alleged negatives aside)

The block is definitely worth a $20-$25 offer
to the seller... check this out before you give
up on it altogether...

Granted, Bill Langs prices are generated from his loony bin
price index, but a block of 4 of 421 doesn't fall out of trees...

*R*, thank you so much for the insight. The listing expired. I'll have to check if it sold or was relisted.

Again, Thanks

I disagree with much of the advice and opinions given in this thread. First of all, blocks of the 1910-1922 high values (except the 511-518 group) are uncommon. The hinge remnant in the center is no big deal, it could easily be removed by soaking - just as the soiling probably could be removed with a soapy bath. If freshened up a bit, this will be a nice block, and $66. for a $200.CV high-value block is, in my view, very fair and reasonable. If I collected used blocks, I would buy this in a heartbeat.......

John... if you haven't already, consider
sending a friendly message to the seller,
that you would be interested in the block
at $x.xx, and if he would be kind enough
to consider your offer to buy...

Thanks to both Bill Weiss and didi123 for you kind informative input. I greatly appreciate that.

As for the "other" posts, I don't mind if they were a bit misleading. Perhaps we all learned something from this thread.
