Hi,

I have always been fascinated by stamps and I was a stamp collector in the Philippines since 5 years old but I was not able to continue my hobby when I started highschool. Lately, while taking my Masters here in the USA, I have had a lot of free time and I decided to rejuvenate my Stamp Hobby.

Frankly, however, I have lost touch with the hobby and I tried reading books about it just to update myself. I have also to start from scratch on my stamp collection and I am having a hard time gathering stamps nowadays especially when people are more inclined to use emails and if they do send mails, they use the machine printed ones. Anyway, I would really appreciate it if anyone could lend me a hand in starting up my collection. Thank you very much and I look forward to participating in the forums.

SIncerely,

John

First things first, you must decide what areas you want to collect !

US
Single country

Welcome John!

May I suggest you focus on a few countries, or a region in the world. A worldwide collection, to-day, is too broad, and you'll get lost in it.

Hi John,

If you don't mind a suggestion about which countries to collect...
For a begining stamp collector I'd suggest you sellect a country/countries that interest you, but also countries that don't have a lot of minor varieties. SOme countries' stamps have a lot of minor varieties that are hard to determine one from another. On the other hand some countries like Ireland or Iceland are pretty straight forward to collect.

Welcome John. I agree with the general trend of the stream, i.e. focus. But, whatever you choose make iot your own. If you want to go with a world-wide approach you can consider a 'topical' collection by selecting a topic, e.g cars, animals, bears, men with beards or anything that has some interest for you in the rest of your life and build a collecvtion off of that topic. Youi will find a lot of help right here once you decide on a direction or path you wish to travel. Good luck....
