Just received this today. The cancellation is a new one for me. Although it's not completely legible, it's "E.A.S.," which a Google search tells me was Everett A. Scholfield.

Is this a Civil War era taxed personal photo?

Sort of. Commercial photographers were required to pay taxes on their work.

I knew about the Bruce Baryla collection but had never seen the website. My knowledge about the tax on photographs just increased geometrically. Thanks, Chip!

You'll want to read through his Gold Medal winning "Civil War Sun Tax" exhibit frame by frame:

The exhibit is no longer intact. Bruce sold it off piece by piece on ebay early last year. I ended up with many of the better cancel-related items, some of the plate varieties, and the R6e.

Thanks for the link, Dan. Wow. The depth of the exhibit is unbelievable. I remember those auctions on ebay if the seller name used by Bruce Baryla was shardsofhistory. I got one of the leftovers for $20.
