Hi Family,
I have been busy filling "holes" in my collection. For the second time, I have ordered (amongst other things) SCOTT 753 from Mystic. It arrived today. For the second time, the stamp was GUMMED. It is my understanding that the difference between a 733 and 753 stamp is that 733 is GUMMED and 753 is UNGUMMED. Am I wrong or is MYSTIC wrong?
Thanks for helping, Jack Kelley

I believe #753 is supposed to be ungummed. The Scott catalog goes on to make this point: Quote: "No. 753 is similar to No. 733. Positive identification is by blocks or pairs showing guide line between stamps. These lines between stamps are found only on No. 753." At the time of original purchase, they were only available in sheets and blocks as recited here: http://www.uspostalbulletins.com/PD...19350218.pdf |

no right or wrong here... 753 and 733 singles can never be differentiated. Some 753's were government gummed by special request. 753's can only be identified when they exist in 'line pairs'. If your album has a space for 753 single, you can use the one from Mystic - soak off the gum if it makes you feel better! |

God WT1,
I don't know where you find this stuff, but the newspaper article is clear enough for me. The $.03 Little America (Byrd) indeed was re-issued UNGUMMED. Looks like MYSTIC got it wrong (again).
Thanks for your help, Jack Kelley |

Re: special request gumming. It took place in the very early 1940s and was only done with full sheets.

I wondered about that "special gumming" mentioned by others, but it doesn't seem to fit Scott 753, at least not according to my Scott Specialized Catalog, which states, in part, that: Quote: ...requests were limited to full sheets of Nos. 756-765 and 769-770. No other Special Printings were accepted for gumming... |

WT1,
That was my understanding, too. The re-gumming was for sheets only. Not 752 or 753 which were perforated.

I'll just throw in my 2˘ worth that you might find a better price/deal somewhere other than Mystic.

Kirk,
I'm afraid you're right. I've spent a small fortune at Mystic over the past two months. I love, love love the Mystic Heirloom Premium albums and have bought two sets so far. Plus a binder and sleeve. So seven volume in all. No complaints what-so-ever. Over on the stamp front, it is a completely different story. Its like dealing with two seperate companies!

Mystic is great if you're willing to pay double what you'd pay elsewhere. |

Clark,
I was just about to ask about alternatives. I am really disappointed with the quality of MYSTIC's stamps, let alone their prices. I will certainly try Henry Gitner. Thanks for the tip!

Quote: I am really disappointed with the quality of MYSTIC's stamps, let alone their prices. I have not bought stamps from Mystic, but I do know when they sent me numerous catalogs that they have a disclaimer that states the stamps they provide (generally for those post 1935 anyway) are said to be in Fine condition. Now if you refer to the Scott Catalog, they claim their values for stamps of that period are based on items in Very Fine condition. So not only are you paying for an overpriced stamp from Mystic, but the quality is below the values shown in the Scott catalog. |

Jack, you might want to take a look at stamps2go.com to satisfy some of your needs. I've found the prices of most sellers to be reasonable, as well as the shipping cost. |

wt,
Read the fine print on US Classic issues, they claim "Very Good" centering and generally price them at or above Scott when in reality VG Classics bring a small fraction of Scott. |
