You know, a little courtesy would go a long way.. possibly a little optimism too. |

First of all, I don't see why no one else should answer the OPs question. We should be as helpful as possible. This is not a quiz show nor do we need to be difficult because the OP may have not phrased the question fully.
I think Kevin is implying that people have different ideas of what "unused" means. Postally unused would be you see no evidence of it going through the post, i.e., a cancel, for which you might need 30x magnification. However, it has no gum, so some folks may consider this used, but its probably more accurately described as unused no gum (NG).
Anyhow, I'm pretty sure the Scott catalogs and other resources can provide this definition for you. If you collect to certain catalogs or use them as a classification standard, use the definitions of terms provided by THAT catalog. So, it might be prudent in the future to fully research such resources for definitions and then when posting, either explain a little more your understanding of the issue or that you can't find this information anywhere. I bet, a good search of this site would provide quite a few discussions of the meaning of "used" or "unused". |

In revenue collecting, uncancelled with no gum typically means "used." I realize that postage stamps (and the means by which they are cancelled) are different than revenues, but I also see why Kevin would want to understand the OP's definition before answering. So I don't think he was being discourteous, sarcastic, or difficult. Except for the first sentence, I also agree with HungaryForStamps. |

HungaryforStamps.....My reason is simple. The original poster has posted plenty questions asking about items here.... With 148 posts he/she should have some basic knowledge.... So....you post a stamp....#584, uncancelled, no gum.....you ask if this is unused??? What do you define as unused??? Like RustyC stated....the stamp could have been used BUT uncancelled?? Does that make it unused??? or used???

maverickx....OK, seems you have answered your own question. If you think NO CANCEL is unused.....then this item is UNUSED. Not trying to be sarcastic.... It is really that simple.

Anyhow, rather than post cryptic responses to the OP's question a simple response would be courteous or no response at all. A few extra words can go a long way. For example, I think "the stamp could have been used BUT uncancelled" with the caveat, that it "depends on how you define unused" would have sufficed. Its certainly not many more words than posted in the first two responses so wouldn't be taxing on the fingers.
The request that no else respond is certainly not helpful regardless of the level of experience of the OP. |

HungaryForStamps, I completely agree. Maybe maverickx isn't a native English speaker. Maybe he/she hasn't read basic guides yet. Maybe he should post these basic questions in the Main Stamp Collecting Forum: https://goscf.com/f/37maverickx, have you read through a Scott catalog or through basic guides yet? |

If some of these posters just "do a little research" they can answer their own questions. Instead they just post a picture....what is this?
Look at his posts....all are the same. Post a picture....what is it?
This one could have gotten into a drawn out topic??? Thus Im asking him what unused meant to him? He stated ..."not cancelled".....simple, its unused.

kenin504, I agree with most of your points. However, no one seems to have as of yet to call maverickx out on the fact that he needs to learn more. Instead of helping him learn, you choose to complain. If you don't want to help him learn, then keep your snide comments to yourself. You have spent more energy trying to make him look bad than trying to educate. I'm going to be sarcastic here: kevin504, I just can't even imagine why anyone would want to start stamp collecting when there are so many helpful people such as yourself. As far as I can tell, this is a dying hobby. You are definitely not helping. Please use your knowledge to help others. Heck, even if you were snappy and told him that he should learn more, it would be better than you're dismissive attitude.
Once again, I agree with your statements, but I disagree with your attitude. Keep it up and no one is going to care about the hobby. |

Hey maverickx, this isn't a competition. Regardless of snide comments, the facts remain. We are all working towards identifying and finding out what we have. Don't give into other's combativeness. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, I'm just trying to point out what is trivial.
I need sleep. I wish you the best. Goodnight. |
