The postcrossing site sounds interesting. I'll have to give it a try when I'm in a country again
which actually has postcards for sale. Here in Oman, I've only found one place which had postcards
of Omani scenery and that was at ..... the airport! Aside from that, I've always sent postcards when I've traveled. My daughters love them. I've got all the postcards my dad sent me from when he was in the air force and all his temporary duty assignments (one of my favorites is from Isfahan Iran ca. 1977). Just out of curiosity, does anyone place the stamp in the upper right corner of the picture side? I've got a few old postcards like that in my collection and it really makes it nice and easy to display both the image and the stamp.
A bit off topic: The last time I was in the US I noticed that my youngest daughter had actually constructed and painted a cute wooden box which she puts my letters and postcards in. So, writing isn't just a way to communicate, I guess it's a way to "make memories".

I have been doing the Postcrossing thing for about 9 months now. I am more interested in the stamps than the cards, but it is fun sending and receiving cards from all over the globe.

Since first reading this thread I have joined Postcrossing. And find it very nice to receive a post card in the mail once in awhile. It's worth the time.

A nice lady in England has sent me a rail-related card just to cheer me up! As raywrio no doubt knows, you have the option of accepting direct swaps with people with similar interests.

Collecting postcards (deltiology) is a great hobby, third in poplularity after stamp and coins. I travel a lot and always send cards and likewise receive them back from my stamp collecting friends around the world. Postcrossing certainly helps promote the hobby and this is a great way for kids to learn about other countries...and how to apply a stamp and post a letter. You'd be surprised how many kids have no idea about the snail -mail system these days.
Being a bird stamp, bird postcard/ postal stationary collector, it's always a thrill to find a card like this in the mail box

I travel thousands of miles each year on my motorcycle doing a thing called the DamTour. We ride to 20 different dams around Pacific North West taking photographs as proof that we visited the dam....... anyway I get to tour inside a lot of dams. I always send our DamTour webmaster/organizer a dam postcard whenever I can.

I love postcards. I've even made a few postcards using an online print on demand place-- I've done three designs. One of the museum where I'm director-- We didn't have any, which was surprising, because what tourists we attract, often ask about them. I also did a postcard themed postcard to promote postcardcollector.org, which is where I've had some difficult deltiological questions answered and wanted to do something nice for that (at the time) new site. I also did one featuring book trade labels.

Here's my postcard postcard design:

You too Bas! I'm starting to run low on these postcards and I'd like to maybe do another, esp. now that I know a lot more about postcards than I did when I did this design.

I just signed up for Postcrossing but thought of something that would significantly hinder me in participating. My problem is that I do not collect postcards...I only collect stamps. There are many pre-paid postcards out there which do not have stamps on them so I was wondering...for those that are already participating in this exchange - what percentage of your postcards have actual stamps on them?

I have only received around 16 post cards over the past year, all paid with stamps.

On the plus side, you get some nice postcards with stamps.
On the minus side, (1) since the idea with post crossing is the card itself, not many (what I would consider) nice stamps to collect, (2) cost of postage adds up fast, (3) it is just darn hard to find picture post cards now and those I do find (mostly at points of interest) are expensive.
Between the cost of the card and the postage (most of mine being overseas), it costs me $2.00 a post.
