Does anyone have a list of which Scott #'s have spots (or which ones don't) in the Davo Hingeless Album Vol 1? Or know where I can find this information?

I have the Davo set for US, and I like it a lot. I also have a Scott National album. I think I still like the Davo more because I like how the stamps look in the bright white album pages. I do have some extra blank Davo pages at the back of one of my albums, so I am thinking of trying to add places for the Scott #'s that aren't included in volume 1. I would try to mirror the look of the current Davo pages, and take the pages to someplace like Kinko's and try to get them to the boxes on the pages, so it would look nice. Then I'd try to purchase some clear hinges so it would look like the other pages. Has anyone tried something similar before? Thanks!

I will try to answer (from memory). I bought a set of hingeless Davo albums ~7 years ago and eventually sold them because they lacked too many spots. I don't recall if volume 1 went up through the National Parks issue (or just beyond) or ended after the second bureau issues. I guess it really doesn't matter - I pretty much remember what it was missing.

- All 19th century reprints (Scott 3,4, 40-47, 102-111, 123-132)
- Numerous 1867-68 grilled issues (pretty much anything that is considered rare - 'A', 'B', 'Z' grills)
- Banknote special printings
- 3rd bureau coil stamps
- A lot of the 4th bureau coil stamps (and for those that are included, there is only a mount for single stamps)

I know there was more missing, but I can't recall all of them.

I just have to jump in here. I picked up the first three volumes of Davo hingeless, with volume 2 and 3 mostly filled with mint, for a good price. I am coming from the Canada collecting world and I am quite discouraged with the amount of blank spaces in the Davo albums. It seems that the US take every variety, no matter how slight, and gives it a Scott number, where in Canada, we would give these a letter or roman numeral. I have about two pages to go to fill my Canadian Davo album and every space is possible to fill (well, there will be some proofs in there) but I have no hope of ever filling every space in my US Davo album. Very frustrating.

Thanks, Brian, for your info, that will help.

And, you know, TomSwift, I was actually thinking the same thing that the US Scott numbers have practically every single variation, however small. This is probably something that I will create a new thread for. However, I think some of the variations are barely noticeable without a magnifying glass. If the # of perfs are different, or if the differences are very noticeable (like the "sleepy eyes" of Scott 3/4 vs 1/2), then I can see a new Scott number. However, if it's something like there's a break in the line for one, but no break in the other, that's almost like wear in the print machine or something like that. I'm new at stamps, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

For those of you who have Davo albums, I've gone ahead and mapped Volume 1 to their Scott Numbers. As was mentioned by Brian, the reprints are not included. However, a lot more coils are missing than I would have thought.

Here is the entire list, with each line being a new row on the album page. If there are any corrections that need to be made, please let me know. Although I have volumes 1-6, I only plan on doing this for volume 1.

glchen, you are now my number 1 hero. Fantastic! Amazing! I am starting my US collection with a Davo Hingeless album and was dreading going through every insane minor variation of US stamps in order to figure out what goes where. I had to do that with my Canadian Davo album but that was orders of magnitude simpler since they don't add every microscopic minor detail of every stamp variation so you saved me hours of work. Whoo Whoo!!

Regarding page 2, nos. 48-62 do not exist in the current Scott number system. At one time certain essays and proofs were given major Scott numbers but not any more. So the number of missing Scott numbers on p. 2 is only 40-47.

Thanks for the kind words, TomSwift. I was hoping that others could make use of this also.

For those who don't have Davo albums, but are considering purchasing them, the spots for coils are usually for just one stamp rather than coiled pairs. Also, I just included what major Scott numbers were missing and not (a), (b), (c), etc types or different color or other variations.

To glchen: I would like to second TomSwift's comments. I subscribe to Linn's and receive the APS journal and your post was the most useful piece of information I think I've ever received. One question, You note that the spots for coils are for single stamps only..no pairs. I don't seem to have spaces for ANY coil issues. Perhaps I have an older set of albums (I only use Volume I).

Thanks for the comments, howell. I think I interpreted this page that I've attached (27A) as coils. (Also, on page A3, one of the airmail coils is included.) Most coils were left out, I don't know why.

I forgot about that page. I do have it. I wonder what criteria they use to include these Presidential coils, but exclude a whole lot of others.
