I'll give you some background.

I inhereted a stamp collection from my great great grandmother. A large amount of the stamps came from 1860-1920. Furthermore every one of these stamps has been locked up since the mid 1930's in safe keeping. I have become aware of the rarity of this item and am wondering the fair market price for such.

It depends on the condition. Also. you'll need to get it certified.

The notes on Scott #423B (2c rose red, perf 12x10) say this (my comments are italicized):

Quote:
"All examples of Scott #s 423A-423E must be accompanied by certificates of authenticity issued by a recognized expertizing committee. Fakes made from perf 12 (Scott 406), perf 10 (Scott 463), and imperf (scott 409) exist.

and ...

Quote:
" ... One unused and 30 used examples are recorded"

There were literally billions upon billions of the 2c Washington (design A140) issued, but only 31 known copies of perf 12x10 have been recorded. As much as I'd like for you to have found a great philtelic rarity, the chances are very high that you have a forgery.

That said, I would love to see your stamp. There are several experts and a great many exeperienced collectors on this forum who can offer you an opinion on your stamp. The most ideal photo would be one scanned at 600 dpi or higher.

Cheers!

Brian

I hope you have the real deal and the back-story is one of the types of scenarios where just such an item exists. Try to take a high resolution picture of it or better yet (and recommended) scan it against a black background unless it's hinged into an album of course, in that case just l eave it well alone and if you can scan the whole page and crop out the stamp you speak of. Like mentioned their are a lot of Classic USA stamp collectors and expertizers here so you are in good company here friend! ALSO -Welcome to the Stamp Community! Respectfully -Jeff

We need a good scan against a black background.

I have one that I posted here and everyone seemed to concur that I should send it in for a possible cert; this included several experts who's opinions are highly regarded.

But here is the rub, once you get past this hurdle you are then looking at tying up a substantial amount of money to get a cert. It is not like you can send in a high catalog value stamp, wait to see if it is legitimate, THEN pay the $800 maximum ($28k catalog value = non-APS maximum fee). You chunk down the $800, send it in, and then get a refund if the stamp is not real. Since a stamp like this is not going to be cert quickly (might have to have several sets of eyes on it) you end up out substantial cash flow for a month or two.

But I agree that posting an high res image here as a first pass is a good idea; the hard decision comes after that.
