Can anyone tell from these photos if this stamp is genuine and what the catalog number and current value might be? The back still shows glue but is cracked.

I'm not able to tell if this is a #6 or #7. Any ideas which?

Scott specialized states "Number 7 shows coarser impressions than number 6 and the color is duller and often blurred. Gum is light or dark and unevenly distributed"

Best of luck.

You can also determine which printing it is by the paper. #6 were printed in London by De La Rue & Co on Hard medium high quality paper. It is somewhat translucent.
The early #7s were printed in Richmond Va on the same kind of paper, sent from England along with the plates. Later #7s were printed on local paper which was thin to thicker, but totally opaque.
Nothing's ever simple is it?

Just for fun (and who says stamp collectors don't know how to have fun!) I've scanned my three CSA 5¢ stamps on lined paper. The Jeff Davis on the left is a #6 while the other two are #7s. See the difference in printing quality? The left side stamp is a much clearer impression. It was printed in London. The paper has a slight translucence - you can just see the lines on the paper behind it showing through.
The centre stamp is a local printing (Archer & Daly, Richmond VA) on the London paper. It is really translucent, the background lines are very clear. It has a bit of a waxy feel (not that I go around stroking my stamps all day). The third stamp is a Richmond printing on opaque local paper.

Just looking for one of these in a deep blue colour, and that page in the album will be complete!

Wow, jamesw that is great information. Thank you!

IndianGoldEagle, I hope that post helps you make the determination. There's not much of a difference in price between the two, but there is a difficult to determine difference between the two.

As you noted before, your investment didn't pay off handsomely. However, having each variety is important to many who collect.

Take care,
Ryan

-EDIT

As stallzer pointed out, there is a difference in printing quality between the types. That will also help you identify it.

Thanks guys, really good info. I believe I have the #6 De La Rue issue. Just gathering info on these three stamps has now reignited my interest in this field. I don't do ebay so can someone recommend a dealer with reasonable prices where I can pick up an example of the other major types that I would like to add? I did an internet search yesterday and what I found was some very high priced material, didn't seem like the real world prices everyone refers to.
