Hi all

I have been lurking here and on other forums and blogs for a while and decided the other day to take the plunge and join.

A month or so ago I bought myself an old second hand copy of SG's worldwide Ideal album. There's quite a few stamps in it but it looks pretty sparse, and I'm really looking forward to filling some spaces with stamps I've already accumulated and tracking down ones I'm missing. I've been following a blog on the filling of a Scott equivalent and so I've named my albums Big Red

I've had a rather scattergun approach to collecting up to now, with quite wide interests, so this seemed like a good way to try to focus a bit. I also prefer earlier classic stamps to the modern stamps, so the album's good for that ending in 1936 - although in true scattergun fashion there are a number of modern stamps that have made their way into my little stockbook of choice stamps. I saw someone here refer to their stockbook like this as JBS - Just Beautiful Stamps, which I liked. More prosaically mine's called Stamps Wot I Like.

I've enjoyed going to the local stamp fairs I've been to and I've already met met some friendly and interesting people and I'm looking forward to meeting some similar people here

Best

Crispin

hi Tinman

Thanks for the welcome! I did put into my info that I'm from London but it doesn't seem to have filtered through. I like the fact that you get responses here from all over the world

I don't know if an update to my first post should be here or would be better in another thread, but I've had such pleasure from reading other people's posts that I wanted to make some contribution.

For 28 months since my original post I've been working on Big Red and other albums, and doing quite a bit more lurking round here. The albums are now looking much fatter.

Before

Now

Much of my effort has been directed towards the second album which was significantly emptier than the first album. Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Peru, Uruguay and the US have all had significant additions. Here's a page of Switzerland - still waiting to hinge in the last few stamps ...... I've never claimed to be organised or methodical

There's been a very interesting discussion on another thread about whether or not to collect worldwide or specialise. For Big Red, I think there are a number of countries where I may never put in any stamps unless odd ones come with a mixed parcel of stamps. Contrariwise, for more than a few countries I'm taking the collection up to or beyond 2000 rather than sticking rigidly to the timeframe of these albums.

One thing I can say is that buying these two has had nothing but a beneficial effect on my collecting. I get great pleasure out of choosing and hingeing the stamps for the countries and even greater pleasure when I actually complete a page. Unlike the Scott International albums, Gibbons never made any effort to keep out the expensive stamps so there are going to be a number of empty spaces even in those countries that I'm favouring
