When news reports of high prices are all that non-collectors hear of us, is it any wonder why every Tom, Dick & Harry who finds a cigarbox full of stamps pulled-off the family mail thinks his ship may finally have come in?

Yeah, that makes sense. The newspaper is not likely to run an article about the hundreds of packets sold every day for a penny a stamp (or less). If their only exposure to the hobby is through news reports of prices in six or seven figures, they're likely to get the wrong impression as to what the vast majority of stamps are really worth.

People buy lottery tickets even though they know what the odds are. People generally just don't understand how statistics work.

That, and even at 200-million to 1, that's the *best* chance most ticket buyers of ever have of getting that much money.
