US R18 Simple Precancel?

I can't remember where I saw it, but a recent Auction had an early stamp with a simple ink cross like the one shown, and it was listed as a Precancel. How about this example that I found in Grandma's collection? (Note: I know NOTHING about Revenues, but sure like the look of them.)

I should add that your stamp could have been "precancelled" in the sense that the user made the cross over one or more stamps before affixing it to the taxed document or article. For first issue revenues, the most certain and desirable precancels are printed on the stamps, like this:

It is a precancel in the sense that they were usually done as part of a large multiple before they were used, but this was a fairly common practice. Revenue stamps were proof that a tax had been paid, and technically it was paid when the stamps were purchased because that was when the government got the money, either directly (a revenue office) or indirectly (an agent who sold revenues, the most common way). It was than up to the taxpayer what specific document or item was taxed, so it did not matter when the stamp got cancelled as long as it was applied at the right rate. There were rules about how the stamps were supposed to be cancelled, but these were often ignored, as they were in the manuscript cancels here. Printed cancels are generally the best kind, but some are definitely more common than others, and some handstamp cancels are quite scarce.
