2014 Chicagopex Revenue Hoard, Part 1 Of... Well... Lots.

I'll use this thread to post interesting items I find in the 12-volume revenue accumulation I purchased. The images are high resolution, so you may want to click on them to open in a separate window.

First, there are the 3 pages below. The first two are the items that I had pulled out Thursday night to buy at retail before I thought about buying the whole collection (yes, I showed these to the seller before we started negotiations).

The third page is the items I found yesterday after buying the collection.

PAGE 1:

Row 1, stamp 3. Silk paper.
Row 2, stamp 2. Great embossed "Castor oil" cancel in Old English font.
Row 4, stamp 7. Clapp & Co's Magic Ball. Eric has one in inventory at $200.
Row 5, stamp 2. VERY rare "War Tax" cancel. Richard prices this at $300.
Row 5, stamp 3. Not only a neat manuscript block cancel, but the stamp has a doubled top frameline.




PAGE 2:

Row 1, stamp 2. Brown ink cancels are exceptionally rare, more so than green ink.
Row 2, stamp 5. The Naylor & Co. cancel normally found is the diminuitive oval cancel rather than this one.
Row 3, stamp 2. Unusual unattributed "K&B" monogram. I have this cancel also on an R22b.
Row 3, stamp 3. Great embossed shield.
Row 3, stamp 4. A (presumably) Simon de Visser cancel I've not seen before. The most common are the circular and the SdeV large roman letters.




PAGE 3:

Row 1, stamp 2. "Dr. Hopkins Magic Powder" with "KEEP CLOSE CORKED" in the center. Very rare. $250.
Row 2, stamp 1. Lesser state of T13a double transfer (bold at bottom, but nothing at top).
Row 2, stamp 2. Greater state of T13a on silk paper (unlisted in Scott).
Row 2, stamp 3. Unlisted all-over double transfer.
Row 2, stamps 4 and 5. Two different states of T15 double transfer.
Row 2, stamp 6. Double transfer, doubling down right side.
Row 3, stamp 5. Unidentified oval silhouette.
Row 5, stamps 1-4. All silk papers (R53d with double transfer).
Row 5, stamp 5. Hart L. Pierce counterfeit.

revenuecollector.....impressive.

Forgive me for asking, or not knowing if common knowledge, but do you just collect, or are you a dealer also? You must have some deep pockets. Although I do not collect revenues, I do collect air mail and covers, and I can imagine what it would be like to acquire a collection of such of this quality. But only imagine. Nice score.

I think I need a tissue. For my mouth.

All with such lovely cancels! I found myself thinking that maybe I could collect revenues with cancels from Minnesota.

My my haven't you been the busy one! Great buy! It always amazes me how many plate varieties go unnoticed by non-revenue dealers. One would think they would take the time to examine what they own. I guess this only adds to the thrill of the hunt for those who take the time to do the research.

What I am learning about revenues is that the cancel is almost as important as the stamp, yes...no? Beautiful set, congrats.

Collector first and foremost. I do, however, sell and trade duplicates and pieces I have upgraded.




Actually, I don't. I only make in the mid 5-figures, but have no family and carry a fairly high debt load. Many people spend money on their homes and expensive cars, vacations, home furnishings, fancy clothes, etc. I do none of these. My collections is where my money goes, as that's what I enjoy.

It's all about priorities and trade-offs...

Absolutely... if you are a cancel specialist. In the same way that usage and cancel means more than the stamp to a postal history collector or front-of-book fancy cancel collector. Conversely, to someone who collects and studies documents and rates, the stamp and cancel may be only a minor consideration.

The wonderful thing about revenue cancels is that there is SOOOOOO much more variety than front of book from the same era.

Obviously this did not come from one of the major revenue dealers.

In connection with the first stamp in the first scan, it's always interesting when you can connect the name on the cancellation to a face and a bit of history of the person so named:

I've taken pictures of the whole kit and kaboodle before I start breaking it down. It's a quick-and-dirty affair, with poor lighting and some of the pics a bit blurry, but scanning the pages would have been virtually impossible without cutting apart the stockbooks.

Roughly 20,000-25,000 1st-3rd issue revenues all told. Quality is mixed, many of the imperfs, part perfs, and supposed silks are bogus, but still there are plenty of decent items throughout, even before I start the flyspecking process.
