I think the tell-tale sign that it is fake is the position of Washington's right iris, in the fake it is more centered and in the genuine image of Scott #2 it is off center. Am I correct in this?

Yes, that's one of about 1,742 signs that it is a fake. If you want a single indicator look no further than the absence of the engraving firm's initials (RWH&E) in the frame below "TEN CENTS" in the fake example.

As Dudley notes it was the missing initials that gave it away right away for me.

The presence of the secondary (outer) frame line at the edges of this cutout makes me wonder if this was merely a reproduction of the design for some purpose other than counterfeiting. More like an unofficial reproduction for decoration, possibly on an old envelope and not necessarily done in the US.

This repro/fake does not seem to have been intaglio printed (engraved), but looks more like surface printing (litho) or even typography. The coarseness of the lines, and their much broken appearance, is not consistent with intaglio. I think we are looking at an artifact from popular culture from some years back. Just how many I cannot say, but such things are varied and plentiful.

Everyone is correct that this is a forgery, however, let me point out that it is a highly collectible item, as there are collectors who avidly go after them. On ebay, this might bring $20/30. but if a knowledgeable retail dealer had it for sale, he would likely ask $50/75. While that is a long way from the value of a REAL US #2, it also isn't worthless.

In general, those who collect forgeries will pay more for those that are well executed, so that (for example) the Sperati forgery of US #2 sells for $500.+ This one is rather crude, but still not junk!
