Prior to Mr. Stevenson there never was a standard for grilled stamps. This Michigan collector put together the current classifications back in 1913. In just three years his grill system was adopted by most collectors.

Scott starting using the system in their 1926 edition of the Scott US Specialized catalog. Mr. Stevenson was to become the one of the most dedicated scholars of the Classics.

However he soon sold his personal collection in 1918 and got out of the hobby. At the time he had a large specialized collection of grilled stamps along with all of his reference material. I can only wonder why he did because he lived another 40 years.
