I see what you are saying Chip, and I go along with that. But how common is it to have a vertical stroke divider at the point of the reversal of direction?

That's what is throwing me off too! I see the new york upside down and backwards in relation to the city and then the stroke devider just doesn't make any sense to me either. |

Actually, the inscriptions are not upside down in relation to each other. They are oriented in the same direction for "upright." But the inscription for "NEW YORK" follows the lower curve and runs retrograde in relation to the other inscription which follows the upper curve. |
