I was going thru a batch of late-1800's New York State cheques and came across several from Stissing National Bank in Pine Plains each of which had the same revenue on it. In all of them, the vignette seemed to be 'trending' low although the one shown is clearly a mis-registration. Not being a revenue collector (aside from hunting & fishing revenues), I was wondering if this is a common occurrence for this revenue issue, and if a freak such as this has any additional value. Dan?

I'm not a revenue collector but I do have quite a few and found that these types of things are pretty common. There are all sorts of varieties in this particular issue, so I doubt that would would put it above catalog value any. Then you have that punch cancel to contend with. It pretty much wipes out any value it had at all. Sorry, but I think you might want to keep on looking through that pile. I'm sorry. Still it's neat to look at! -Jeff

With or without the punch cancel this is a $1 retail item. Both this stamp and this type of check are VERY common.

Unlike U.S. airmail stamps, where there seems to be interest in "fast plane", "slow plane", etc. positioning varieties, there is very little interest for positioning anomalies in 2nd and 3rd issue revenues. There are some people that collect them, but they are few and far between, thus the pieces are unlikely to garner a premium. Occasionally you will see interest in blocks that have misregistration, as it creates a more dramatic visual appearance.

They issued 91.8 million of these in a 35 month period, and they were not overly concerned with getting the portraits exactly in the center of the stamps.
