I use a fairly old copy of the Scott specialized. A 2002 that I got for .99 cents with free shipping. It's still very helpful, and very little has changed when it comes to IDing 19th and early 20th century stamps. What I did just notice is that the 2002 catalog lists the 63b dark blue at $90. I was just looking on ebay and saw several with a listed CV of $ 800! Has the CV really gone up that much? I wonder if my 2002 has a typo.

EDIT: forgot to say "used". Mint is $550 in 2002.

Thanks for the quick responses.

That's quite a jump in just the last 2 years. I didn't realize some more "affordable" stamp CVs changed that drastically.

Catalog value does not always reflect true scarcity, especially on plate and shade varieties.

True dark blue #63b is a scarce stamp. There are many "darker" shades of the ordinary blue shades that are not 63b, which is the only one that expert services recognize. Although having just said that, I have seen several certs in the past where the stamp was described as 63b, which wasn't.......

Is this a true comparison of a 63 and 63b?

Here's my range of colors on the 1c 1861
None have been certified (though one of these days, I should send them off, I guess)

Sorry ILS, I dropped the ball on the images, but I see other members are there for us. :)

I did see quite a few 63b certs on ebay. After reading Bill's comment, I wonder how many are wrong. Sounds like a stamp that needs a cert for the cert.

Color varieties are a bit of a mystery to me. Based on what Bill said, would the darker varieties actually be the 63, just overinked, slightly different ink mix, or...? Why do some color varieties get a minor number while others don't?

Sorry I just seen how I wrote that and certainly didn't mean to sound pushy..lol It was just an artifact of chemo probably. Still it's great to see an example. I actually might have one of these,I'll have to go look.

I didn't think you were being pushy. Now this guy, on the other hand, looks pushy.

This is a #63b w/ #65. #65 is a more pinkish that what my monitor is showing. Its an 1863 pinkish rose shade (I believe). This is on a small cover w/double circle New York May 31, 1863 cancel.

Below is a strip of three from another cover. I'm curious if these could be #63a or just #63 pale blue?. Any help there would be appreciated.

Below is probably just #63 blue (pair and a single)on a small cover.

FWIW Here is a plain blue (normal) shade flanked by ultramarines.

Edit - same thing more deeply toned to get the blue closer to yours:

OK, from what I'm seeing on my monitor, the ultramarines appear to be a "Flatter" or "duller" blue tone than the strip I've posted? Is that the way you see it?
