The larger we grow the more times we get the same type of thread. My so and so died and I have the large collection what is it worth?

So my thoughts are why not have a forum topic for inherited collections. This would be a clearing house for all the information which in truth will be the same for most of those people asking about inherited collections.

It would hopefully quickly give answers to the new stamp collector about their inherited collection. They would quickly find out what we need to help them such as photo's. By reading through the threads they will see the good information provided on how to get it appraised or where to go for more information.

The thread could become a great wealth of information for the new collector and provide faster help.

What do you think?

I'll second that. Sounds like a great idea.

I agree, kind of a toxic holding tank..most of those people usually do not post more than 2 times ! Perhaps we can come up with 2 or 3 stock replies !

A sticky post on the subject would be a great idea. Maybe some links or common questions and answers to go with it.

Of course, we do have the exceptions whom decide to not sell and start collecting themselves.

You're right on target Dude. The first statement should be something to the effect that we hope they will keep the colloection, etc.

Just a follow-up to mkfarm's suggestion... new member Nixer posted the question again today.

You've probably seen Lloyd DeVries has a similar article on the Virtual Stamp Club website. But, with all respect to him, it leaves a little to be desired. I bet the folks here could collaborate on an even better version.

There has to be a merciful way to explain to these folks that 95 percent of stamp collections are hobbies and not investments like a tax free municipal bond..their relatives collected for pleasure..not to ultimately find a buyer !!

I agree Phil; I tried to say as much in my response to John Paul.

On the other hand, I don't want to answer every such inquiry as the bearer of bad news. That's why I think it would be a good idea to have a FAQ here that we could point to when asked the question.

It might also serve as a "recruitment" tool for new folks -- they google " inherited stamps" and wind up on SCF. We break the news to them, "you're not rich." The we tell them, why not join us as a collector -- learn something new, enjoy a new hobby, etc.

Just my $0.02...
KirkS
