I found this MNH strip of four in a collection, where the previous owner had recorded the plate no. (19974) as being the carmine lake issue.

Is this so?

I live in Denmark, Europe, with no good access to books on the subject.

With kind regards
Jaffar

Hello jafar, my Durland catalog shows plate number 19974 as being Scott #599. So that is a given. Problem is, it doesn't make any reference to any specific plate numbers for the #599b carmine lake. So..., the door is still open for your strip to be a #599b but I can't say for sure based on what I have here.
Maybe it comes down to a color judgement and I lack the experience and skill for that.

Given the wide variances in monitors, color is always a difficult issue...

From my monitor's translation, I'm seeing very strong carmine, most especially in the guideline, but that doesn't preclude the possibility of carmine lake as it might appear on someone else's screen...

With regards to Durland, 599 and 599b would both share the same plate numbers, which includes 685 plate numbers (as per my 2012 Durland)...

Ok, thanks.

I thought one could tell the color by the plate numbers. I have other carmin lake issues with certificates that look more or less identical, but I'm not sure if other less expensive shades look a lot like the carmine lake.

Are any of you familiar with that.

Is the carmine lake issue easily identifiable from the other shades or not?

Thank you for your time and friendly advice.

There is a Dark Carmine shade that can be confused for Carmine Lake. Carmine Lake exhibits a bit of a purplish hue, some may say bluish, in with the Carmine whereas Dark Carmine doesn't. View the strip in good sunlight and it should be more evident what the shade is. On my monitor, it does appear as it could be Carmine Lake, but that's just an opinion based on the image I see on this monitor.
