Until I looked it up, I never knew of that description for New York, but here it is:

Quote:
Baghdad on the Hudson - New York, New York, USA (this nickname, coined by O. Henry over a hundred years ago, was originally intended as a compliment, in reference to New York's status as a center of culture and literature...

The late columnist Herb Caen frequently termed his home city, San Francisco, as Baghdad By The Bay. That appeared in innumerable columns in the 1970s and 1980s.

Interestingly this photo is of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan rather than the usual midtown shots. The tall building under the B of Baghdad is 70 Pine Street with the Woolworth Building right next to it on the right.

They wanted a river shot for their 'Baghdad On The Hudson' theme.

Only, that's not the Hudson.

And, that's not Baghdad, either, so I guess they're two for two.

It is a great shot though. Imagine that same picture when the bridge was the tallest structure.

An interesting problem in composition.

To emphasize the height, you would shoot from ground/sea level.

I cannot easily remember seeing a picture of a bridge that made me happy I was seeing its underbelly.

Suspension bridges look better when shot at (or slightly above) deck level, as this emphasizes their graceful curve.

Aerial shots of bridges over water are favored because the water provides a living but uniform backdrop for the bridge.

My favorite shot of the Brooklyn Bridge is monochrome (color would only distract) and fish-eyed (evoking that Passing Thru The Gates Of The Temple Of Life feeling that comes naturally to both native New Yorkers & visitors).

I've got a pile of these cards, so SCFers who would like one of their own can send me an eMail with their pMail.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey (who will not go so far as to re-purpose John Wayne's line: "Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you about it. And if he's not, why embarrass him?")

LOL, yes of course. Not even a helicopter to help out...

ikey, that black and white shot is similar to the one I took and use as my phone screen.

A walk across THE bridge, should be on every ones bucket list.
David McCullough wrote a wonderful book about the building of the bridge.
