The "imprint" could be a National Bank Note Co Impt....
Like offset for the selvedge marking.

edit for spelling error

An interesting piece. It is probably an owner's signature.

You mean the blue ink set-off in the UL of the #114 right? I think I agree with Kevin.

Kevin
the national bank note imprint on 1869s has straight lines around the imprint. this imprint has little balls around the imprint like
the sides of the 6cent side bars that encase the united states on the 6 cent stamp. Jerry

Hi Jerry! Hope you are warmer down there than we are here, and I KNOW you have less snow on the ground than we do!

Your item is indeed interesting. Is there any way you can show us an enlargement of just that area what seems to show the 6c imprint? But let me quickly add that it does not seem to be reading in the "normal" orientation which at best, makes it an offset (or do you think it DOES read in the normal orientation?). If an offset, then the only question is "what caused it"? And that would be difficult to answer without seeing the actual item to compare the color with the issued 6c stamp and if a "perfect" match than it becomes more interesting, but still difficult to say with 100% certainty because I can quickly think of 2-3 different ways it could have happened.

Hello Bill
It is good to hear from you .If you want to get away you are always
welcome to stay with me and Andrea down here. Now about the stamp, I do not have it down here with me but you can upload it at RetroRevaal website it shows it in all different images. Its on the public list hit #10 box and scroll down. It seems to me it reads better with a mirror. The more I look at it below the b and right of the b on the signature I can see larger balls from the b to the 2nd perf top right. Just like on the 6 cent stamp, see what you think. Jerry

Jerry,

You are very kind. And please give my best to Andrea!

I am not able (for some reason) to access that site (other than to sign up to join it, which I don't want to do). Can someone else access that image that Jerry is referencing and upload it here?

OK, that #114 image is only 0.11 megapixels....BUT

Here is the best I could "finagle" off of that site. I hope these images can help in some way?

gmsadusky, I had to snag your original image and they was really super grainy but I lightly used the sharpen function in Picasa3 to bring out a bit more detail. I joined that site just for this so I have really no idea how to fully utilize the functions of it.

Jeff, I'm like Bill and don't want to sign up for another site, I get too much spam as it is. But can you get color images that I can download and use color filtering to help manipulate?

In my uploaded image is there anybody with keen eyesight can see from the top right 2nd perf to the b in the signature a semicircle of balls that look like balls that frame the portrait of G.Washington on the 6 ct stamp of 1869. Maybe its me because its my stamp and that's what I want to see in mind. thank you all Jerry

I did exactly the same thing as "I_Love_Stamps" in Picasa and was unable to read any more than one or two letters which was not enough to convince me. But as I said earlier Jerry, even if it *is* an offset of part of the design of the 6c 1869 stamp, the explanation for HOW it got there would be difficult to prove. I can think of legitimate/contemporary ways it could have happened and not contemporary ways. Be sure to show it to me next time we see each other (or send it to me).

The two right-hand letters look like "T-E" to me. So I guess a possible tie-in to the design of the 6c 1869 is that the right-side is "United StaTEs". (?) Don't know if that helps Jerry. See you (God willing!) in the springtime!
