Hi,
I can never tell the perforations by looking at a scan. However, it will fall into the Washington-Franklin series issued between 1912 to 1918. The link to Wiki will give you the perforations which will help ID the Scotts #

Gator... it's not a 498...

A 498 corner to corner across the image frame
horizontally is ALWAYS 11 perf holes to be perf 11...
and vertical holes at 13... this one has 10 horizontal
and 12 vertical, so the stamp is perf 10, which will
eliminate 498 as a possibility...

disi123,

I see 12 holes vertically. Does this make it a 423D?

Randal, count the COMPLETE perf holes between just the borders of the stamp design on top and/or bottom. If there are 10 complete perf. holes(do not count partial holes), or 9 complete holes and 1/2 of a hole on each side, still within the border of the design, its a perf. 11. There are 10 complete holes both on top and bottom of the stamp that has been scanned that fall within the border of the design, therefore its a perf. 11. Reference below. The corners on this stamp are somewhat rounded and obscuring partial perf holes on all four corners. if the corners were not rounder , you'd have full and partial holes to make the 11 holes.

Jkelly-- W/F stamp designs are approximately 2cm wide but are more that 2cm high. Perf. measurements given in the references are for the number of perfs. measured within 2cm. Your count of 12 perfs. is in an area greater than 2cm. If you count the perfs. in an area the same size as that of the width (approx. 2cm), it should correspond to perf. 11 (on the posted image).

Gator... your images prove it's perf 10...
I stated 10 holes corner to corner of the
image frame, not the stamp itself...

Look at your perf 10 and 11 images, and
imagine shifting the holes to the right
so they would be exactly at the corners
of the image frames... the holes would
be 10 and 11 respectively...

Jack... it's as perfect a perf 10 as any
perf 10 stamp can be... it's not a combo...

I'm at work and don't have a Scott catalog
here to look it up...

per Clark: "A perf 11 stamp will have 11 holes and 10 tips or 11 tips and 10 complete holes between the lines."

I count 10 complete holes and 11 tips on both the top and bottom. Dave's reference image does illustrate the procedure correctly, but doesn't make all possibilities clear.

Randal, if it were a perf. 10, there would only be 9 complete holes within the confines of the frame lines.

Welcome to the world of Washington/ Franklins. There are many books dedicated to identifying these. I would not even attempt to do it from a scan. There are some really good web sites. Do a google search. The names escape me but one has 1847 in the title the other is something like stamptiger. I have them bookmarked on my home computer. If you are identifyting W/f's you will need a perf gauge, watermark fluid an known example of a flat plate printing with the corners nipped like a 498 or 499 is very helpful and finally a good book on identifying or one of those websites. There are so many possibilities with W/F's.
