I am starting a new thread at the request of new member d307menace, who needs help posting a question:

Welcome aboard Dennis.

SUN Philately, NY purchase before I learned about SCADS many years ago, far outside return window...

I am glad to have found this site. I have this stamp among others, that I am sure an experienced philatelist could discern immediately. I live in Wyoming and am unaware of any collectors or clubs within hundreds of miles, so ebay was a great way to fill my album as a hobbyist. Now I have several questionable stamps that are on the borderline of needing certification.

I am wondering if there is a post that members of this group offer advice as to weather a stamp would be worth the postage, cost of cert., time, etc., to send away for certification, and at what point would a graded cert. be worth the extra charge.

You guys (and gals) are awesome!
Thanks, and Howdy! from Wyoming, USA.

Dennis (D307Menace) on ebay.
If you have any comments, questions or suggestions on my offerings, I am aware of my ignorance of the finer points of this excellent hobby, but I certainly have an open mind and willingness to learn as well as a commitment to be an asset to the hobby rather than a liability. I strive to be fair, open and honest...

my guess: sure, it may have hard to find faults, but the 519 ID looks reasonable, assuming the perfs match other p11 stamps.

In my opinion, there is a good chance that is a genuine 519. If Clark Frazier or Ken Srail (or others)see this thread, their opinions are valuable too.

Thank you very much essayk. I appreciate your efforts on my behalf. You are very kind.

Chasa, I appreciate your input. The perfs. align very well against the trusty Correcto Gauge perf. 11 marks. I bought this for less than 1% of cat. for a genuine used 519, so my confidence is very low as to it's authenticity, but it does fill the space with an appearantly genuine stamp that resembles an actual 519 fairly well. I just want to mark the stamp as a replica if in fact that is what it is. However, I am an American, and I like to dream big, so I find it difficult to rule out my lottery ticket without checking it twice, it just costs twice the price I paid for the stamp to determine if it is legit. I'm cheap and looking to see if an online ID service would tell me enough, or if it would need a cert. anyway, I don't want to "waste" time, effort and money I don't need to. I am really a hobbiest, not an investor, or expert by any means. This hobby helps with my compulsion to organize things, but the empty spaces in my album bother me. I still have a daughter in school, and one that just left home, so my hobby allowance isn't too great. I am trying to fill out my U.S. collection of early used stamps as best I can afford with genuine, decent looking stamps that have as few outwardly visible faults as possible. I just want a nice looking album, not an investment portfolio or World Series of Philately worthy collection. It just occupies my mind sorting and mounting stamps better than sitting in front of the television. And the members of this site provide much better content than anything I have viewed on the History channel in decades.

Thanks again,

Dennis

You could spend a small amount and send it off for positive identification before getting a certificate. Bill Weiss has such a service for $5. There are also certification services that charge only a small fee if a stamp is found to be incorrectly identified.

I feel the same as you in regards to philately and to this forum. I'm glad you're here and the more the merrier in my opinion.

In my amateur opinion the perforations appear genuine. If it were mine I'd send it off for at least confirmation of the identification. More members will likely chime in to give further opinions.

Congratulations on your first genuine, authentic Weiss certificate, issued by an expert and a gentleman. May many more such "highly collectible" certificates join it in your collection.

P.S. Having the 519 in your collection is also good.
