James and I just came across this stamp in a collection that James acquired recently.

1854 SG#88

According to Stanley Gibbons it is worth AUD $1450 in used condition.
I was wondering what your opinions of the stamp are and how the offset printing would affect the value. Also the Scott catalog value as a comparison please, if anyone can help.

Steve

Scott lists a few similar to this.

Is yours lithographed or engraved? And what's the watermark?

Hi Steve....

Two thing immediately come to mind......first.....it does not have offset printing.....it has very poor perfing.

second....I'd like to see the back.

I don't normally get into specialising, so I'm not sure.
How do you tell?

Here's the back.

You can generally see and/or feel the ridges of the engraving. Lithography or offset printing will be flat.

Hi Steve,
Looks like this is Scott #65 with watermark 55. Not a lot of value I'm afraid. You should check the perfs and report back.

Watermark 55 .....Large crown and NSW can clearly be seen by my eyes at least although a second opinion would not go amiss.

I hope you have found a gem, but maybe you haven't !

Good luck

Oops ! I missed the perf part of your message !
Perf 10 all round has a cat value of $2.50.

The SG # is 243....I believe.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

I just knew it wouldn't be worth $1450.
