I bought this stamp because I wanted an example of a preprint paper fold, but I was also intrigued by the marking, which I haven't been able to identify. I don't think it's a cancel, but it's obviously related to a patent medicine. Can anybody help?
It is a cancel. Some companies put the appropriate revenue on their labels and then used a large advertising cancel to tie it. The only way to see all of the cancel is to find one still on a label. Alas. A 5 cent stamp means a product that retailed for $1.25.
Thanks, rev. It's good to know that it's a cancel, but wow. I did a little Google searching for patent medicine labels, and, as your "alas" intimated, it looks like identifying the company is a needle-in-a-haystack proposition at best.
