Here is something I recently picked up on ebay, as an addition to my reference collection of suspicious items. Urbana would have had 3-4000 population at this time, so maybe this is an unofficial 2c bisect usage but...
  • despite two obvious places where the grid killer should tie it to the piece, it isn't tied at all;
  • there is evidence of something having been removed in the stamp-void area;
  • there is evidence of adhesive at LR

Interesting reference piece and great explanation. Just curious - maybe it's my eyes or the scan playing tricks, is the diagonal "cut line" straight or uneven?

Hal - I had not noticed that! Yes, the cut-line bows outward slightly at Washington's cheek.

My guess the stamp was cut sometime after it was applied. That would further confirm your suspicions of tampering.
