Aside from the small fault (scrape) above the "C" in CENTS
there appears to be a 'rosette' of sorts below the left collar...

Has anyone seen this phenomena before ?

Not part of the design. Kind of looks like a small adhesion stuck on the stamp. Did you get a really CLOSE look?

Nice stamp!

This is the best that I can do with the optics I have to work with...

I looked real close with my 10x lens and wore magnifier glasses...
it's definitely there... appears to be like a sunburst...

It looks to me as if the stamp may have had some sort of repair (i.e. from the bottom of the nose around the mouth and to the chin). Could that "sunburst" have been another attempt at a repair? (Not sure, just opening up the possibility.)

If it helps I took your original image to focus in on the area in question and came up with this:

Something stuck to the paper as it was being printed (dead bug?) that subsequently fell away, leaving an unprinted spot.

wt... no detectable repairs that I can see...
back of stamp appears as sound as the front
in that regard... thanks for the 'blowup'...

dudley... interesting 'bug' hypothesis...
gives a whole new meaning to 'flyspecking'... (smiling)

[Added]

Interestingly, upon further study, this stamp
has guide dots in all 4 corners...

Now I'm wondering if it's even a 73...

dudley... thank you kindly... wasn't aware of that fact...
time to obtain more reference material for my library...

I've done a little more digging... and, apparently, most
73's have some 'activity' (so to speak) below the left
collar... and, in addition, I went through ALOT of the
die and trial colors Langs has listed, and many of them
have 'activity' very close to the 'sunburst' effect on
this stamp, albeit not as pronounced...

I'm inclined to think at this point, it's a plating anomaly...

disi, I prematurely posted my last message (now deleted) instead of previewing while doing some fact checking. But the Lane book is indeed available at www.uspcs.org.
