Here are two nice stamps I clipped from a parcel in October of last year. Since the letter was from another collector, I assume he knew the value of his "postage."

The 2008 Scott value is $2.00 Mint and $1.00 Used. Maybe I should have written back and asked him to sell me some postage at face value

It's nice to get such things in the mail. I always try to use good current or older commeratives on my mail, but I'm not sure I'd put dollar vaue stamps on there.

I thought special delivery stamps were devalued and not valid for postage, though I could be confused.

If they were, today's postal clerks are probably too young to remember and aren't told because no one expects to see them. Especially when they are worth 10 times their face value when used as postage.

The bottom copy is especially poorly centered for most collectors. I'm guessing the bottom perfs are all there though they appear to be clipped in the scan. It's possible there might be a thin on one or both, or that they were no-gum copies that got the glue stick treatment. They certainly are not from the same sheet of stamps.

Am not knocking your stamps, just suggesting why, despite their current catalog value, they were ultimately used for postage.

No offense taken :-) I understand your point -- they're not great copies. They're still on paper, so I'm not sure about gum/glue. You're right about the centering, although the perfs are fine (it's my scan that clipped them).

They probably won't wind up in my collection, but I always clip envelopes and save in a big ziplock bag with the intent of donations to kids and beginners. But, bottom line, I think they look good enough to be collectible or at least fillers.

Come to think of it, I'd like to have a $5 Columbian that looks as good as these two :-)
