Alternate Subject Line: How Do You Subtract 5 From a Number This year, for the first time, I joined the APS. Back in October 2008, I completed the application, submitted the pro-rated dues, and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, I became a full-fledged member. In the membership packet, there is a coupon for $5 off my 2010 dues. Even though I'm new here, you already know I'll lose that coupon before the end of the year. So, I decided to pre-pay for the next year and use the coupon now. OK, now for the hard part.... How much are the dues? Based on the website, my best guess is $33.75 for a regular calendar year. Can one of you long-time members confirm that for me? P.S. Someone here told me there are no dumb questions. I bet I've changed his mind on that own

Thanks guys. I'll take $5 off that and send them $40.
I haven't finalized my opinion of APS yet, but so far I'm enjoying my membership. The magazine is good. As soon as I got my number, I signed up for the US 19th Century Circuit Books. I got my first one last week -- it had a few nice items. Of course, I was the last name on the list, so a lot had been taken. I anticipate they'll get better as I gain seniority.

Don't write off the APS yet. That is great that you already received a circuit book, some takes months to get back to you. I attended the St Louis Stamp Expo 2/28 and dropped by the APS booth hoping topurchase an Abe Lincoln tie (they didn't bring any ). Anyhoo, the attendant whose name I can't remember but she works for the APS library(it wasn't Gina Horn I met her the year before) asked if I would like to enter a drawing for 1 of 3 philatelic books: Encyclopedia of US Stamps, The Liberty Series, or The 100 Greatest US stamps. Since I had the Encyclopdia from t360 of this forum for becoming a Pillar , I chose the Liberty series book. To my surprise I won the drawing and my book arrived today from APS headquarters postmarked with a 75 cent Great Smokey Mountain and $5 washington & jackson diamond shaped stamp to meet the priority mail fee. |

Thanks guys. Stamperdude -- don't worry, so far, I have only a positive impression of APS. I understand the reasons for the time between application and acceptance, but it's still hard on those of us who like instant gratification :-) Phil -- you're very gracious and I appreciate it. I'm APS 214797 and you're the first person I've told I live North Carolina; just a few minutes away from the Great Smokies; maybe one day, I'll get time to make a pilgrimage to Bellefonte. |

If you can afford it, it pays to become a Life member of the APS. My grandmother lived to be 104, so I plan to get at least 50 more years from my Life membership! |

Good point, t360. I'll start saving and exercising :-)
Phil -- yes, Asheville is nice. The don't call it Land of Sky for nothing. I'm a little farther west, closer to the Balsam Mountain Range. It's a nice part of the world to live in.

Stamperdude, congrats on winning the drawing. We never really saw the APS table, couldn't get Tom to pass the entrance door to the show! |
