It is perf 10 on all edges. One of the members here (51studebaker) created a perf gauge that you can print. It's not as easy to use as a manufactured gauge, but it is free:

Save that file to your computer, then open it to print it. It is perf 10 on all edges. One of the members here (51studebaker) created a perf gauge that you can print. It's not as easy to use as a manufactured gauge, but it is free:

Save that file to your computer, then open it to print it. Since not all of the perforations are on an exposed edge, you can fold the paper at the tips of one of the sets of teeth and then hold it up next to the stamp.

http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...entifier.htm shows that only flat plate printed stamps had perf 10. This leaves only #425 and #463 as possibilities. The difference between the two is the presence or not of a single line watermark.

disi, I thought that the 539 was 11x10, not 10x11. Is it possible that Ciletaliph meant "Perf 10 OR 11...Soo many varieties"?

I take back what I said... apparently his image size distorted
by a few degrees when he uploaded it... so the on screen template
turned out to be wrong, because I then did the Srail test and it
matches 10 on the sides... sorry for jumping the gun...

disi, no worries. Your enthusiasm now makes sense. I didn't find any distortion though. All perfs are identical on their image. Maybe you accidentally changed proportions when making your template?

It's probably my screen resolution... I penciled in the centers of his
top and bottom holes and compared with the sides, which came up with
the incorrect comparison...

Then I downloaded a second copy, then rotated the image, and then they
matched in the Srail test...

Ciletaliph, is there a particular part of the ID process that you would like better explained? I gave my reasoning for my ID but by no means did I detail a process that works for all of the Washington/Franklins. Also, pick up some black paper or plastic when you can to put behind your scans to help us to see the perfs better.

Here is the method that I use which is very quick and not prone to error. I select the outline of one stamp. If you're using Paint.net, then you can right click and drag to rotate the selection area to line up the sides if they are slanted.

I select copy then create a new layer and paste the selected area. I then rotate the layer 90 degrees. By dragging it around, I can compare vertical to horizontal perfs to each other and vice-versa.

Then it's just a matter of counting perfs.

Hi Ciletaliph...Welcome to the forum.

If you have a good perf gauge to do a reading, great, or you can you can do it in software...I have a layered perforation gauge that I use..If you have Photoshop witch I presume you use Windows then great..If you don't have Photoshop and do not want to put the money out to buy it..There is a FREE alternative (GIMP) developed for Linux, but I will place a link for you windows users..Scan your stamp at 600 DPI and open it with Photoshop or GIMP...All I do is drag the perf gauge over the stamp and let go...Now you can pull the gauge up/down until you get a reading..Below is GIMP with my 13.3 perf on my stamp.

Below is the link for Windows people to down load...
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

Now if I can figure out how to get the perf.GIF to you if you want to try it..??

Well no wonder I was stumped, I guess I measured the side perfs wrong. Thanks guys for all the little tricks and tips, I'm learning alot going through these collections! I don't know much about stamps and decided to go through some of the tons of stamps I've collected over the last 40 years.

wert, that is a great alternative. I remember finding the thread where that overlay was created. I want a copy if you don't mind. I just tested it and a gif can be uploaded to this forum.

A note to those wanting to try this. You can use it with other resolutions of scans by scaling the .gif. So if you want to use it on a 1200 dpi scan, then you would scale wert's gif by 200%.

To use it you will also need a program that uses layers. Wert mentioned GIMP which is a free and very powerful program, but it isn't very intuitive. Another free option that is much easier to use is paint.net available here: http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

Ciletaliph, I recently went through 1000 stamps in 20 bundles of 1908 series 2c Washingtons in the same kind of "bundleware" It yielded two #500, one #461, one #540, and several interesting oddities. Hopefully you have as good of luck as I did. The bundles of stock transfer and postage due stamps may reveal some goodies. Hopefully you've got some earlier definitive stamps in there. Regardless you'll have a great choice of the best stamps possible to fill or replace many positions in your collection. Call me weird, but I love searching through hundreds of stamps.

One of our experts, cfrphoto/Clark said in another thread that searching through large quantities of groups such as the 1908 series 2c Washingtons can be very rewarding. I wonder if he was the winner of a recent ebay auction of 5000 of them that came from Northern Europe. He made that statement shortly after the auction lot would have shipped.
