How do you know it was a 1922 envelope if it was not postmarked?

The stamp you show was not issued until 30 years after 1922. It can't be on a 1922 envelope unless you mean an envelope that you know, from some other information, was made in 1922 but not used until the 1950s. But the term "1922 envelope" as normally used, means an envelope postmarked in 1922.

You've left out some piece of information, it would seem.

Well, that explains why it ain't postmarked. Someone slapped a 1954 stamp on a 30- to 90-year-old postcard sometime between 1954 and 2015.
