I need a Scott 500 for my collection and was looking at this one up for auction. The more I looked at the stamp, it seems the perfs on the right side (looking at the image) appear to be too round? Pulled this image from the auction site so it's poor resolution prohibits detailed analysis. But just eyeballing it what do folks think in general?

Here is another slightly better image but still not a high enough resolution. |

That is an offset printed stamp which are often confused wtih #500. The right perfs don't appear to be non-original. |

It looks bad because it is an offset print and not a Scott 500. There are 5 types of 2 cent offset with perforations. You can tell by the pinkish shade and overinked appearance. Do a search for 500 here and you will see plenty to compare. You can find a real one. Keep looking and asking questions. Bill |

Here is a discussion that provides some help in how to identify offset stamps: https://goscf.com/t/40951#348932Offset stamps differ in that they do not have any ridges which are present on the intaglio/engraved process of manufacturing the flat plate and rotary printed stamps. Some collectors gently drag their fingernails across to detect ridges. Another method is the "tinfoil test" where you lay a piece of thin/cheap aluminum foil over the stamp and rub across the surface of it with something like a cotton swab. If it is offset printed, then no lines will show of the surface of the foil. The design will appear on the foil if it is a flat plate or rotary stamp. Edit: if this is an auction presented as a #500, then please take the small amount of time to post the inaccuracy to http://www.stampsmarter.com/ to inform others. |

That stamp has 7 bids and is at $21.+ with 12 hours to go. Seller has offset stamps for sale. He must be listing by the numbers the collector had them in. If you are 1 of the bidders and win have seller test the stamp before paying. |

This link leads to two images that show the result of a tinfoil test that indicates flat plate or rotary printings. It isn't the easiest to see that the design of the test stamp was transferred to the foil, but it does show that the tested stamp is not an offset printing. https://goscf.com/t/40718#348957 |

It's certainly an offset, it has the characteristics of type IV, V or Va based on the left numeral. The other characteristics cannot be seen in this image.

Here's a previous discussion where you and I were involved which provides great information for identifying #500. Pay the closest attention to the links provided by srailkb: https://goscf.com/t/41826 |

A quick examination of the left numeral 2 in all the images in that post will show a significant difference to the left two of the stamp that started this post. The stamp that started this post is an offset. There is no question about it, the only question is which type, as I said this image is not clear enough to tell that. |

revcollector, I am not disputing that with my additional posts. chaulkdust's post focused on finding a #500 to fill their collection. As for identification of the stamp in question, I agree that the left numeral 2 is important and that a better image is required to identify it. chaulkdust doesn't seem concerned to know the definitive identification of the stamp that they are posting. |

Yikes, totally missed the broken line in left 2. I was so worried about the the perfs. Yep, offset, yes I will try and post to the site recommended about this auction. Thanks |

Sent a message to the seller about the stamp. Mentioned the tin foil test as well as the left 2. Couldn't post to stampsmarter since I was not a member, but did send them a message about the auction item on ebay. Also, signed up for a membership but the auction will probably be over by the time they can post it? Hopefully the seller will retract the item. |

Good timing, I just reported this one on Stamp Smarter earlier today.
Its usually easy to spot the 2 cent offset printings because Washington looks like he's wearing lots of eye shadow. |

Here's a larger clearer shot... It's an offset Type V, # 527... Tell the seller to cancel the bids and take down the listing... |
