When the stamp in use there were probably plenty floating around for children or casual collectors to trim to what ever shape they wanted. In this case maybe the original owner liked the unique shape. Rules are made to be broken and this was likely done before there were any.

They do appear to be proofs. Totally destroyed from a philatelic standpoint, but proofs none the less.
