One thing I would like to point out to everybody is that they should keep in mind that these stamps were printed only about 2mm apart from each other, so anything other than a sheet margin copy would not have a heck of a lot of room to reperf a side and still leave a decent margin. So always coinsider the spacing when trying to figure out if a stamp could be reperfed or whether, given the tight spacing, it's unlikely. But don't let this influence your opinion on this particular stamp.........

Ken Srail was credited with "inventing" this method of computer perf comparisons a long time ago, I believe on the old Virtual Stamp Club. Before he explained it clearly there, I do not recall anyone else explaining it before him. So obviously, he did not "invent" the test, but he certainly popularized it!

BILL WEISS makes an excellent point. Look how clean and well shaped the bottom and left-hand perf rows are as compared to the right-hand perf row. Bill, was this stamp shown in the ASHBROOK SPECIAL SERVICE at some point? There is something very familiar about the cancel on this Blackjack. Or, is this ex-Caspary?

Hal Bill…Is this the same stamp?!?!?!?!

This is a nice stamp... if I collected cancels,
I'd buy it in a heartbeat... the perfs are right
on, on all 4 sides... no chance of reperforation...

I doubt this stamp was in Ashbrook's Special Service because there's nothing unusual about it. The cancel is a common "Phila/PA/Post Office" postmark used in the c.1860s on lots of local-use mail. The centering isn't spectacular, but still fairly nice.

Thank you everyone for all the great information, Desi for all the image manipulations I can't do right now, and Bill for explaining the cancel. I was trying to figure out what ended in "ice" and why it was going opposite of PA.

This one does appeal to me, not a messy cancel and the perfs dont cut way into the design. I'm going to buy it.

Bill, it was actually on the ebay stamp chat board, not VSC. It goes back to the mid- to late-1990's, and many of the old time ebay sellers will remember the discussions that went on for many years, as I frequently explained how and why it worked to new visitors.

..and you're right, nothing had been done before then, largely because the required flat bed scanners were expensive and no seller had one. Remember, back in 1996 you could browse every lot in the entire US stamp category (all subcategories) in a few hours. If an ebay lot had an image at all, it was usually from one of those $300+ digital cameras that recorded directly to 3.5" floppy disk, LOL! Any scanner with more than 300 dpi optical resolution was expensive (I think I paid $1,000+ for mine in 1996 or 1997.)

While I shared my early work on the ebay chat boards, I don't think there was any real practical use for the test in evaluating listed items until scanned images became more prevalent, probably around 2000-2001 or so. It was at that time that decent color flatbed scanners in the $250-$500 range were readily available and serious sellers abandoned the cameras and started buying scanners. Predictably, that's when the test found more widespread use and generated a higher level of discussion on the boards.

This is way off topic, but Ken reminded me of my first digital camera. I bought it back in 1995 or so. A Kodak 3.1 1.3 Megapixel with a 4 meg card for the low price of $600. The salesman at the big box electronics store tried very hard to talk me out of it. His final words were "digital cameras are just a fad and I don't know anything about them".

Finally have the stamp in my hot little tongs and time to scan and post it. Funny how the toning didn't show up very well in the original (sale) scan! :)

I am keeping it, I still like the eye appeal and 4 clear margins. I will search SCF for ways to deal with the toning, but any suggestions here also appreciated.
